New! The Sound Sorting System focuses on the mastery of the pure sounds of the alphabet, and the letters that represent the pure sounds. It is designed to be used after children are introduced to the letters and their sounds with sandpaper letters and the moveable alphabet. The materials break the 26 pure sounds of the alphabet up into 5 groups (or Boxes). The groups are organized to introduce the most common sounds first, to have distinctly different sounds within each group, and to include a single vowel in each:

Using a two-step approach, Initial Sound Sorting and Spelling Cards, the materials build confidence and reinforce competence with the pure sounds of each letter (a skill set necessary before beginning the Waseca Reading Program). As its name implies, the Initial Sound Sorting activities emphasize mastery of initial sounds using printed letter tiles and wood pogs with illustrations of common nouns that start with those letters. The Spelling Cards build uponthis knowledge, teaching identification of the initial, medial, and ending sounds to compose c-v-c words. We believe that the skills gained working with these materials will build a strong foundation for your nascent readers!
