In the upper elementary classroom, students continue to build upon their Continent Studies knowledge base, moving toward mastery of the materials to gain working knowledge of a continent. At this level, we highly encourage that the work with the Continent Biome Cards and the included mats’ command cards serve as a structure for independent research and encourage the integration of language skills through creative writing and journaling exercises about the continents, their biomes, and the people who inhabit and explored them!
Work with the Elementary Continent Mat Bundle and the Biomes of the World Mat creates a strong foundation for learning about specific geographical features around the world and exploring biomes in relation to the equator, migration routes, climate, and ocean currents. Their upper level command cards, in conjunction with those of the Biome Mats, provide ample opportunities to learn more about the physical geography of each continent and encourage research and writing. This knowledge can be applied to more sophisticated mapmaking with the Continent Stencils and serve as a point of reference when learning about the plants, animals, and peoples included in the Continent Biome Cards and the Continent Portfolios. Stock your Cabinet of the Continents with the Continent Biome Cards and make sure to have the Animals of the World Measuring Tape close at hand so that it can be used to contextualize the scale of animals as they learn about them.
